West Indies Cricketer Devon Thomas Charged With Match Fixing, Provisionally Suspended

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has charged West Indies batter Devon Thomas with match fixing. Conway has also been provisionally banned from playing on Tuesday. The apex cricket governing body in the world laid seven charges against Thomas which include attempting to fix the outcome of a cricket match as well as trying to obstruct the investigations.

Four of the seven charges levied against him are related to the Lanka Premier League 2021 matches while two are from the 2021 edition of the Caribbean Premier League. The remaining charge is related to a T10 Cricket League match in United Arab Emirates (UAE) also in the same year.

"The ICC has provisionally suspended Thomas with immediate effect after charging him under their Anti-Corruption codes on behalf of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC), the Emirates Cricket Board (ECB) and the Caribbean Premier League (CPL)," the ICC said in an official statement.

"The charges involve "contriving or being party to an agreement to fix or attempt to fix, contrive or influence improperly the result, progress, conduct or other aspects of matches in the Lanka Premier League 2021," it added.

West Indies' Devon Thomas has been charged for breaching ICC's Anti-Corruption codes.

Details 👇<a href="https://ift.tt/qjXDG9N> — ICC (@ICC) May 23, 2023

Thomas, the 33-year-old West Indian cricketer, has been given a period of 14 days to respond to the charges. The former Under-19 West Indies star has featured in 21 One Day Internationals (ODIs). However, he last played an ODI 10 years ago. In addition, he has featured in 12 T20 games for West Indies with his only Test coming against Australia in December last year.

The wicketkeeper-batter has scored 31 runs in the lone Test match, 238 runs in ODIs from 19 innings and 51 runs from 8 innings in T20Is. The news comes as a shock especially because Thomas was recently named in the West Indies squad for the upcoming three-match ODI series against the UAE in Dubai.
